How we've helped Docherty Property

Growth Hub case study

Business overview

Chris is passionate about woodwork. It is the joy for his work that gives him the motivation run his business, even though he has got so many things he wants to do, including spending time with his growing family. One reason why he runs his own business is because he is a self-described family man with a wife and three daughters, these are his priority.

Chris’s background is in engineering.  From the Merchant Navy to renovating houses and setting up his own letting agency doing property management and refurbishment. Having all this experience he realised that with a knowledge of tools and basic principles he could build anything, you just have to adapt to the material. For 15 years woodwork was just a hobby, with its natural properties and ease of handling compared to metal and plastic, wood was his material of choice.

On moving to Cornwall, he kept the construction side of his letting business and built up his client base through the company until he was in the position to run the woodworking workshop solely to offer bespoke kitchens, staircases and joinery projects full time.

It was great to talk through the business and say it all out loud

How we helped

Chris came to the Growth Hub with plenty of business experience, he admits there were things he felt very comfortable with and other areas that he could do with some help.

In his meeting with Connector Chris, he had a good chat about his business and his experience.  When looking at the ways Chris could benefit from business support the two areas were finance for his new workshop and promoting his business.

Chris was introduced to Access to Finance, who helped him with an application for BIG Productivity to support his investment for new equipment for his workshop. This would also help Chris and his business to create further employment.

His future plans are to connect with the business support for marketing his business from Breakthrough in the run up to showcasing his business and products at various county and home shows next year.
