View Lynsey on the opening of her new business
Paws in Padstow
Lynsey and her husband Mike had visited Padstow many times on family holidays with their beagle Rocky. When Lynsey was made redundant a complete lifestyle change was on the cards, moving from a high-pressure job in London to a new life in Cornwall.
Having experience marketing some of the UK’s biggest brands, they identified a gap in the market for a high-end retail outlet specialising in good quality dog products for dogs and dog owners.
This came from the best consumer research – their own!
“We loved how dog friendly the region was, but were really surprised that there wasn’t a doggy boutique in the town despite the high numbers of visitors that seem to come with the furry members of their family. We also struggled to get a dog sitter for the evening we had booked to go to Rick Steins restaurant.”
They had a clear plan on what they wanted the business to look like and had done a significant amount of research and planning, but knew they should reach out to local contacts to get their move off to a great start, and this is where the Growth Hub came in.
Lynsey and Mike met with our Connector Emma at the end of last year and talked through all the options for setting up their new business. This included potential funding, start up loans and support from providers such as Breakthrough, which offer a programme of workshops and one to one coaching which they could access once they were registered in Cornwall.
Another key aspect of Emma’s help was her local contacts. Emma was able to point Lynsey and Mike in the right direction of where they can go to source local suppliers and potential customers.
Things seemed to be heading in the right direction when disaster struck. Having got an eye on a prime retail unit in Padstow, this fell through leaving the couple in limbo.
Updating Emma on the situation, her on the ground knowledge saved the day. She had just met with to another business in Padstow, Trevisker Garden Centre, who were talking about their expansion plans and bringing in concessions to supplement their core business.
This seemed like a perfect fit and after Emma made the introductions the rest, as Lynsey says, is history!
