Rugged Interactive: Simon Heap talking about growing his business
Rugged Interactive is a Cornish company which uses innovative technology and high quality engineering to make it easier for everyone to get fit and remain healthy. Simon Heap has developed a range of motivational fitness equipment to engage both body and mind.
Rugged Interactive evolved from a consultancy designing advanced sports products, including the London Olympics’ Team GB cycling and triathlon teams. Cornwall is a perfect fit for the company, who take their inspiration from the rocky and rugged coastline in Fowey to design and manufacture their products.
“With lack of activity and the rise in obesity high on everyone’s agenda we want to lead the conversation in new and exciting directions, towards an active future.” – Simon
Simon called the Growth Hub after a recommendation from a friend. The business doubled its turnover in the last year and sales have rocketed thanks to clever targeting of potential customers, such as trampoline parks, an excellent website and engaging social media platforms. Simon was looking for a business review to see if there is any support out there to help them control their growth and make the most of the opportunities.
Another reason to call was the company was due to appear on BBC Two hit business investment show Dragons Den.
Growth Hub Business Connector Richard Scutt made a special visit to the company before the show to discuss the opportunities the extra profile could bring but, keeping their confidentiality, the big reveal of the show was kept under wraps until it was shown to the world that Sunday.
Richard discussed with Simon what opportunities there were for high growth businesses which included grant funding, skills development, recruitment support and one to one coaching from experienced business experts.
Simon and the team really had fun with their appearance running a Gogglebox style Facebook live showing their reactions to the tense negotiations with the Dragons and ultimately a successful offer of investment.
Simon has a clear vision of where he wants the business to go. He is determined to stay in Fowey and ensure the majority of the company’s suppliers, including the software development, remains local. Rugged Interactive are certainly a company that doesn’t pull its punches when it comes to business growth!
