A Capital Adventure for Ambitious Cornish Businesses

By Cerys Hartt - 01st July 2019

This September, Unlocking Potential is arranging three unique opportunities for Cornish businesses to have their brands invigorated and their bottom-lines boosted by three different trips to London.

Part of Unlocking Potential’s Future Focus programme, these trips will afford those businesses access to top media contacts, the attention of leading buyers, nationally and globally, and to the latest thinking and practice around e-commerce and digital innovation.

A select group will attend the hugely in-demand national event Top Drawer (9 & 10 Sept). This prestigious exhibition helps ambitious, design-led, lifestyle brands attract – and hold – the attention of leading buyers at home and abroad.

The second event ‘Tell Your Story in Soho’ is a unique opportunity to showcase 12 or so business from Cornwall in a room full of journalists from national magazines. This is not just any room, either: The Union Club, Soho is an appropriately special setting for a more than special opportunity.

The third event will take business owners to the combined E-Commerce Expo, Technology for Marketing and Ad:Tech London events, held at Olympia each year, where they’ll be able to catch and keep up with the latest e-commerce thinking, digital marketing and the kind of technology to maximise customer experience.

Allyson Glover, Unlocking Potential’s Programme Director, added:

“It’s hard to overstate the value for business owners, not just of getting away from where they work to find some headspace, but of talking with peers, industry leaders and innovators, about what they do and what they want to do. It can be really difficult to think creatively about your own business and its future when every day brings a new challenge. These trips are about the specific information and inspiration they take on board, of course, but they’re also about having the time and space to really think.”

Previous successful examples of these kinds of trip include one to London earlier this year to see the Brompton Bicycle HQ and Fullers Brewery, part of a series called ‘Scaling Up for Success in Manufacturing Industries’. In 2018, plenty of stimulating conversations were prompted by the visit to Liverpool for Creative Industries Day at The International Business Festival in Liverpool.

One of the delegates who went was Matt Hocking, Founder & Creative Director of Leap, who said:

“It’s about giving myself the space and opportunity to see what new technologies are out there, what disruptions are happening … I think it’s important for all of us as individuals and businesses to get the opportunity to see what’s out there. Every time I go to events like this it gives me the bigger picture for the possibilities of what we can do, what we can be part of and the relationships we can have.”
