Big cohort of apprentices helps brighten Cornwall’s Hospitality industry future.

Cornwall’s top hospitality businesses are working with a leading college to fill skills gaps in the continually growing industry, creating the future workforce for Cornwall.

Truro and Penwith College has recently supported a cohort of 40 chef apprentices with many more coming through in the near future.

Hayley McKinstry, Director of Business Partnerships and Apprenticeships for Truro and Penwith college, said: "We are so pleased to be working with the new cohort of Level 2 Commis Chef Apprenticeships with a range of Cornish businesses benefiting from the provision including The Ainsworth Collection, The Steins Group, Idle Rocks, The Heron Inn, St Michaels Hotel & Spa, The Lost Gardens of Heligan and many more.”

Apprentices are well prepared for the industry by learning all about hospitality, with a particular focus on professional cookery becoming proficient in all aspects of food preparation. 

The learning has a real focus on sustainable practices, not just understanding where the produce comes from, but also being part of a strong team with career progression opportunities. Particular attention is being paid to their supporting their mental health and wellbeing with resources provided from by ESF funded project, Hospitality Table Cornwall.

Apprentices train in kitchens that are above industry standard and also have the opportunity to work with the country’s biggest names in food and hospitality at a range of events including Cornwall’s food festivals.

Lecturers, Course Developers and Training Advisors at the College have a wealth of experience, teaching the latest techniques. This enables apprentices to exceed their potential and creates strong career and progression opportunities.

The College has a wide range of routes into hospitality from Level 1 Professional Cookery to L4 Hospitality Management which includes an HNC. The qualifications support all aspects of hospitality including Front of House and Commis Chef and Chef De Partie.
