Cornish Brewery Wins Big in Belgium

By Sharp’s Brewery - 25th November 2019

Rock-based Sharp’s Brewery is pleased to announce that its Sea Fury ale has won a coveted Silver Award in the Brussels Beer Challenge.

This comes just a week after award-winning journalist and author, Adrian Tierney-Jones spent the day at the brewery in Rock where he presented head brewer Aaron McClure and Camel Valley Vineyard’s winemaker, Sam Lindo with the award of World’s Best Speciality Brut beer for their collaboration, Sharp’s Camel Valley Pilsner.

It’s been a seriously successful year so far for Rock-based Sharp’s Brewery, who recently won big with twelve major international beer titles across a number of categories. This includes an astonishing seven medals for its brands in the International Beer Challenge 2019 and five titles at the esteemed World Beer Awards 2019 against some very stiff competition.

The Brussels Beer Challenge is an annual international beer competition and renowned platform for international brewers to showcase their beers. Over three days, a panel of 100 expert beer judges sample 1,800 beers from all corners of the world. The participating beers are subdivided into categories based on origin and style and are then tasted. At the end of the three days, the best beers in each category are awarded with a gold, silver or bronze medal.

Sharp’s head brewer, Aaron McClure, shared his delight, “We are thrilled to have won a Silver Award for Sea Fury and another stamp of approval for the quality of our beers. We are really proud of the awards we’ve won this year – an enormous achievement for our whole team and testament to their hard work and dedication to delivering world class beers.

Marketing controller at Sharp’s Brewery, James Nicholls, commented, “We’re incredibly proud to be recognised for our beer and our commitment to word class brewing. These wins are testament to the strength and depth of our portfolio. Not only does Doom Bar continue to excite drinkers, but our wider portfolio of beers, including Sea Fury is also generating widespread recognition. We know that the Brussels Beer Challenge, International Beer Challenge and World Beer Award’s judging processes are rigorous, so we’re honoured to pick up so many accolades for beers that really showcase our brewing capabilities.”

Sea Fury Special Ale takes its inspiration from the stormy Atlantic seas that crash into the rugged Cornish coast during the long, dark winter. This exceptional beer was first brewed in 1996 to satisfy demand from local fishermen for a stronger ale to enjoy after long and often perilous stints at sea. With its inviting roasted and dark berry notes and sumptuous full malt and berry taste, it’s an exceptional example of the special bitter beer style offering substance and depth of flavour without compromising balance and drinkability.

Sharp’s Brewery has a tally of over 100 international brewing awards, which last year included five medals at the Drinks Business Awards, five medals at the International Beer Challenge and two medals at the World Beer Challenge. Achieving these additional accolades this year consolidates this success.
