International Women's Day Interview with Katherine George from Oh So Social

By Growth Hub - 05th March 2019

Katherine George is founder of international, multi-award-winning Social Media Marketing Specialists, Oh So Social. Winner of the Cornwall Business Award's, Young Business Person of the Year and named as one of Cornwall’s 30 under 30 two years in a row, she started Oh So Social, Cornwall’s first marketing agency focussing solely on Social Media back in 2014. We caught up with her in celebration of International Women’s Day to find out about the women who have had an impact in her life.

Who is the most important woman in your life and how have they influenced you?

It might sound strange, but my riding instructor is one of the women who has had the biggest effect on my life. I met her at 18 and not only did she take my riding to the next level, she taught me I could do anything I wanted to. To this day she is one of my biggest supporters and is always there when I need her. She changed my life for the better and I will be forever grateful for her.

What has been your proudest achievement so far?

I'm not sure if I have a proudest moment but I have lots of 'pinch me moments'. Being selected by Facebook as an accredited mentor for their #SheMeansBusiness campaign, speaking at No 10, going to the House of Lords all spring to mind. Plus seeing my team develop and grow, I'm very proud of them and what they've helped me to achieve.

If you were to turn back time and give yourself one piece of advice before you started your business what would it be?

Be brave! Start before you're ready and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. There is only ever one constant in your life and that's you, so stop over thinking things and live for the now.

The theme for International Women’s Day this year is #balanceforbetter what do you think businesses can do to help achieve this? Are there steps that you are taking in your own business to achieve greater balance

Work/life balance is difficult especially when you're running a business but there are a few things you can do to help find balance; flexible and remote working always spring to mind. Learning to switch off and leave work at work is vital and something I have really struggled with but recently I've stopped beating myself up for leaving work at 5 and spending time doing the things I love the most.

In our International Women’s Day Interviews series, we also spoke with Amanda Winwood of Made For Life Organics and Gail Irvine of Dynamo Healthcare TrainingEmily Stevenson from Beach Guardian, and Vickie Heaney founder of Vickie Heaney Printmaking. Keep your eyes on our news stories as we share the experiences of more local business women and entrepreneurs over the coming day.
