As part of Sharp’s Brewery’s sponsorship of the Cornwall Air Ambulance’s Runway Runaround event on Saturday September 22nd at RAF St Mawgan, its ‘Doom Platoon’ rugby team is set to compete in a friendly touch-rugby match against the Cornwall Air Ambulance team. In addition to this, the Doom Platoon has, this year, extended to include both a men’s and women’s team who will both be competing in this fun session.
Sharp’s Brewery was recently announced as the first Major Appeal Sponsor of the Cornwall Air Ambulance’s New Heli Appeal. The sponsorship of the Runway Runaround and Doom Platoon matches shows the brewery’s further commitment to this vital local charity.
Kicking off from 18.15 on Saturday September 22nd, the Doom Platoon men will take on the Air Ambulance team and from 18.35, the Doom Platoon men will take on the new Doom Platoon ladies with the third and final game taking place at 18.55 between the Doom Platoon ladies vs the Cornwall Air Ambulance team. Supporters are invited to come and watch the fun. There are still spaces left to register for the 5km and 10km events.
The fun, non-contact rugby matches will keep walkers and runners entertained whilst they register for the charity runs. The runs will take eager participants around the historic RAF St Mawgan runway, giving them a unique behind the scenes experience of the airbase, past vintage aircraft hangars, watch towers and historic bomb stores on the 75-year-old runway.
This epic event will act as a celebration of the RAF’s 100th birthday, RAF St Mawgan’s 75th birthday but most importantly, as a bid to raise vital funds needed to help the Cornwall Air Ambulance save more lives in Cornwall through its New Heli Appeal. The bitesize rugby matches will kick off at 18.15 before some of the team members conduct a warm up session for the runners and even embark on the next challenge of the 10km night-time race themselves.
Sharp’s Brewery’s ‘Doom Platoon’ team was created when Sharp’s Brewery and rugby legend Phil Vickery embarked on a rugby adventure together, selecting 40 players for a training weekend at Watergate Bay, from which the successful players were selected to make up ‘The Doom Platoon’.
As a Major Appeal Partner, Sharp’s Brewery has donated £10,000 to the appeal, which seeks to bring a next generation Air Ambulance helicopter to Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly by April 2020. The Rock-based brewery has supported the lifesaving charity for more than six years, providing beer for fundraising events and taking on sponsored challenges. In 2014, the company raised more than £12,800 from donating 5p from every pint they sold. Sharp’s is also going to be supporting the Runway Runaround by providing beer for the goody bags that the runners will receive on completion as well as prizes for participants.
James Nicholls, Senior Brand Manager at Sharp’s Brewery said, “These fun, touch rugby matches at the Cornwall Air Ambulance’s Runway Runaround event this month offer a great way to tie in that strong connection between Sharp’s Brewery, rugby and the Cornwall Air Ambulance. We sponsor a number of Cornwall-based rugby clubs and sponsored the 2017 British and Irish Lions Tour so rugby is close to our hearts and these matches should be a lot of fun”.
James continued, “We are extremely proud to be the first Major Appeal Partner for the Cornwall Air Ambulance’s New Heli Appeal. Cornwall Air Ambulance is so vital to the Cornish resident community and visitors alike, and we are delighted to be part of the appeal to raise £2.5m to save even more lives.”
Steph Preston-Evans, Cornwall Air Ambulance Fundraising Officer, said: “The Doom Platoon Vs Cornwall Air Ambulance rugby matches are set to be a really great addition to the Runway Runaround event and should act as a bit of light entertainment for those who are there to spectate or support loved ones taking on the challenge. As always, it is wonderful to have the support of Sharp’s Brewery who are so committed to supporting their local Air Ambulance.”
