Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly is to become one of just 20 ‘Careers Hubs’ across England to help transform careers education for young people following a successful bid led by the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP).

Careers Hubs are made up local schools and colleges working together with universities, training providers, employers and career professionals to improve careers education.

The LEP-funded Cornwall Enterprise Adviser Network has been chosen by the Careers & Enterprise Company to host one of 20 Careers Hubs as part of a £5 million government project over the next two years.

The Careers & Enterprise Company was set up in 2015 to transform careers and enterprise provision in schools and colleges across England. Following a successful Careers Hub pilot in the North East, regions were invited to bid in April this year.

Careers Hub are a central part of the Government’s Careers Strategy, published in December 2017. This aims to improve careers education and help prepare young people for the world of work. It is underpinned by the ‘Gatsby Benchmarks’, a framework of eight guidelines about what makes the best careers provision.

Schools and colleges within a Hub should have a shared vision of how they will work together to improve outcomes for the young people in their area.

The Enterprise Adviser Network in Cornwall is a project that is part funded by LEP and Cornwall Council. It aims to bridge the gap of knowledge between education and employment, by working with both schools and businesses.

Tim Bagshaw, Head of Operations at the LEP, said: “We’re delighted our bid to host a Careers Hub has been successful and it will help bring educators and employers even closer together, through the work of the Enterprise Adviser Network.   This will create better collaboration between education and business, which is vital in a growing economy, particularly when it comes to developing skills in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) subjects and helping local people pursue higher value careers.”

David Barton, Executive Officer of Cornwall Association of Secondary Headteachers, said: “This is fantastic news for schools and colleges in Cornwall, and the additional funding and capacity that comes with the Hub will help us achieve and sustain more of the Gatsby benchmarks of high quality careers provision. It will also help schools and colleges work more closely together with the business community, share best practice and boost outcomes for students across the whole region. We welcome the work that the Careers and Enterprise Company have carried out so far in Cornwall and look forward to the developments to come in the near future.”

The Hub announcement caps off a run of successes for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly including scooping no less than three awards at the recent National Careers and Enterprise Annual Event, hosted at Newbury Race Course.

Charlotte Selley from Penrice Academy was named National Careers Leader of the Year; Rick Stein Group was named national Large Employer of the Year, and Software Cornwall’s Inspire2Learn project was named regional Provider of the Year.

We are already working with the vast majority of schools in Cornwall and this extra funding will help us reach even more institutions and more importantly the students. We are really proud that the work that is going on in the county has been recognised at a national level with the fantastic awards given to Charlotte Selley, Rick Stein and Software Cornwall. With support from organisations and people like this we are able to better prepare the workforce of tomorrow for the opportunities available to them.”
