A leadership and development programme for managers from Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust (CFT) has been commissioned for a second year, following a successful pilot in 2017.
Working in partnership with Truro and Penwith College Business, 60 members of CFT staff enrolled onto the leadership programme in April 2017. Due to the success of the pilot, an additional 30 places have been commissioned for staff to enrol onto this autumn.
The programme was designed by the College and offers a nationally recognised Level 5 Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) qualification.
CFT chose to work in partnership with the College because of its bespoke approach to training and its ability to design a programme around the Trust’s specific requirements.
Staff attending the programme work across a range of diverse services within the Trust, including adult community services, community and inpatient mental health and learning disabilities. Feedback from the first year of the course has been positive, with managers attending saying that they are ‘more aware of their behaviours and how these impact in the team’ and that they have a new found ability to instil positivity within their teams.
The programme focuses on compassionate leadership at all levels and hopes to make a difference in helping staff. It aims to do this by embedding four key principles that the Trust believe are at the heart of compassionate and inclusive leadership:
· Attending and listening proactively to patients and staff.
· Finding a shared understanding of situations staff can face whilst in the workplace.
· Being empathetic.
· Taking thoughtful and intelligent action to help staff.
The nature of the NHS and the challenges our teams face on a daily basis means that a one size fits all, off the shelf leadership training programme simply isn’t effective in delivering the results we need. The leadership training programmes we deliver here in the Trust need to be delivered by an external provider, who thoroughly understands our challenges and goals. It was a pleasure to work with Truro and Penwith College Business on the delivery of this programme.
The Trust has taken steps to ensure the impact of learning is sustained, with each student being assigned an internal coach who is a middle or senior manager from their service team. Internal coaches have been trained in 360o appraisal skills, allowing the service to implement a constant review and feedback process that allows managers to continually reflect and improve.
The level of support from CFT has been impressive and ensures that their staff can gain the utmost value from the programme. Senior leaders are not only involved in the course design but also its delivery to ensure that what is being taught is relevant to the organisation. The managers on the programme have impressed me with their hard work, dedication and commitment, both in completing the qualification whilst balancing existing work commitments and in their willingness to implement what they have learnt, to better support their team.
