Time to be part of a Skills revolution

By The Skills Hub - 30th January 2023

Businesses are being urged to be part of a skills revolution by thinking about re-training, up-skilling or taking on an apprentice.

Members of Cornwall and Isles of Scilly Skills Hub have revealed what they believe may be the main key areas in skills for 2023: Reinvention, Sustainability and Climate, Up-skilling and Re-skilling.

Reinvention:

Following the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, people have shifted the ways in which they work - even those who returned to what they consider ‘business as usual’. Collaboration, innovation, flexibility; these attributes have become the norm.

Businesses can no longer lean on historical success to help determine their future, and the amalgamation of people and technology will continue at pace.

A Skills Hub expert suggests people should start to think more about how best to get a job done rather than thinking solely about who can do that job.

They say: “The key to success will be finding the balance that best suits your business.”

Sustainability and Climate:

The re-definition of business success continues, with social impact and environmental sustainability now sitting, rightfully, alongside profitability.

Larger businesses are advised to think about building a people-centred sustainability strategy. How can they educate, train and empower their team to help shape sustainable practices — whether at home or in office.

The Skills Hub expert says: “For smaller businesses or sole traders, go paperless and use cloud-based solutions should you not already be doing so, or research the ethics and environmental practices of your suppliers.

“Telling suppliers that ethical or environmental aspects matter to you and your business will send a clear message that in 2023 things need to change.”

Up-skilling and Re-skilling:

With both staffing and skills shortages continuing to affect much of the UK, businesses need to think about how they can develop its existing team through training and skills acquisition.

It’s not just the more traditional or harder skills that will be of importance in 2023, either. Softer skills such as communication, critical thinking and organisational know-how can perfectly complement technical expertise, professional experience and other qualifications.

The Skills Hub expert adds: “Improving these skills will see your team become more agile, open to new challenges, and adaptable to change as you shape your workforce for the future.”
