What is an apprenticeship?

  • An apprenticeship is a genuine paid job with an accompanying assessment and skills development programme where most of the training is undertaken on the job.
  • They're not just for school leavers and young people; there is no upper age limit.  To be eligible individuals need to be aged over 16, living in England and not in full-time education.
  • They can be used to either attract and train new talent, or to upskill or reskill existing staff (or a combination of both).
  • They are available at different levels and can be undertaken in all industry sectors.
  • An apprenticeship must normally last a minimum of 12 months although many last much longer - it varies depending on the sector and apprenticeship level.
