National Minimum Wage help for Cornwall’s 8,000 small and medium sized businesses

By HMRC - 19th May 2022

HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) is contacting small and medium sized businesses in Cornwall, offering them extra support to help ensure they pay workers the National Minimum Wage (NMW).

During May 2022 HMRC is sending letters to the region’s 8,000 employers, highlighting common NMW mistakes and signposting to further support.

HMRC will also be offering selected Cornwall employers a free NMW Health Check by telephone with one of their experts.

An HMRC spokesperson, said:

“We know that the last two years have been difficult for businesses of all sizes. We’re here to help support Cornish businesses, as well as to remind them of the rules.

“Running a small business, and there are many in Cornwall, is demanding. Mistakes with the National Minimum Wage are sometimes easy to make, and you may not be aware if something has gone wrong.

“We want to support employers in Cornwall and help them get it right which is why we are encouraging them to use our online help.”

Businesses, irrespective of their size, are responsible for paying the correct minimum wage to their staff. The vast majority of employers make sure their workers receive what they are legally due.

Employers can access support to ensure they are paying the NMW correctly:

Cornwall’s 8,000 small and medium sized businesses employ some 99,000 people. Later in the year HMRC will be writing to workers in Cornwall asking them to report any concerns they may have about being underpaid the NMW.
