Remote Working in Cornwall: Study Ranks Best and Worst Towns

By James Camp - 21st March 2023

Cornwall has become a hub for remote workers seeking a change of scenery, and a new study has now ranked the towns and cities in Cornwall based on their suitability for remote working. The study, conducted by Cornish Vybes, took into account the number of coworking spaces in each town, the average internet speed, train travel time to London, and the number of properties available to rent for under £1500.

Here’s the top remote working locations in Cornwall:

1. Truro

Truro, the capital city of Cornwall, is a historic and charming location that offers a fantastic way of life for remote workers and digital nomads. With four coworking spaces, it is an ideal location for those who require a dedicated workspace to focus on their tasks.

In addition to coworking spaces, Truro offers fast internet speed and a direct train journey of 4 hours and 30 minutes to London, making it a convenient location for those who need to travel to the capital on occasion. Moreover, there is a wide range of reasonably priced properties available to rent, which makes it an affordable place to live and work.

Truro is situated in the heart of Cornwall, which means it is surrounded by stunning landscapes and beautiful beaches. Despite being quieter than other tourist hotspots, Truro has a thriving local business community, which makes it an ideal location for those looking for a healthy work-life balance.

2. Newquay

Newquay, known for its stunning beach views and surfing, was a close runner-up. The town boasts a total of 8 coworking spaces which provide stunning views over the sandy beaches and some even surfboard storage and showers! But the longer train journey to London and fewer properties available to rent pulled it down in the ranking. Plus it is worth mentioning, Newquay airport has regular flights to London Gatwick and around the UK for quicker travel times.

3. St Austell

St Austell was the other town making it into the top 3. Although it might not be as fashionable as other Cornish locations, as a place to relocate as a remote worker, it ticks a lot of boxes. A couple of useful hotdesking locations are backed up by a direct train to London of just over 4 hours, fast internet, and reasonably priced accommodation.

Other Notable Remote Working Locations:

Falmouth and Camborne also scored well as towns well suited to remote workers. Camborne sits inland and provides a lower cost of living but still offers coworking bases and strong transport links around the county. The more famous town of Falmouth is a vibrant place for those looking to base themselves in a creative community with a choice of workspaces and places to live, although longer train rides to London aren't as appealing for those who need to commute to the capital on occasion.

Surprising Poor Performers:

Padstow and St Ives were ranked low on the list both outside of the top 20 remote working towns. While many people dream of moving to these holiday destinations, the lack of workspaces and long travel times to London, along with minimal properties to rent, make them less desirable for people looking to work remotely.

The pandemic has changed the way we work and live, and with more people looking to escape the cities and work remotely from picturesque locations, Cornwall is a real opportunity for many. The research team behind the study hopes that this valuable information will help remote workers
