A unique new hardback book with beautiful behind-the-scenes photography of contemporary Cornish craftspeople will be published in October, produced by Ponsanooth-based photographer Anya Rice and Penzance-based writer Katherine Sorrell.
The pair have teamed up to create the coffee-table book, Make: Cornwall, to demonstrate the quality and variety of craft in the county, focusing on makers working in their studios from from St Ives to St Austell, Padstow to Penryn. They are publishing the book themselves, and are currently raising money for it on Crowdfunder, where it is possible to pre-order copies of the book and buy pieces by some of the makers (including toys, hand-made paints, scented candles, wash bags, cushions and jewellery) at discounted prices.
We really wanted to shine a light on the skill and hard work of craftspeople in Cornwall. We decided to focus on makers whose work is quite contemporary, as that is probably less well known than traditional craft from Cornwall. There are so many people making gorgeous things all around the county, and it was incredibly hard to choose just 25. What they have in common – apart from being based in such a wonderful part of the UK – is work that’s really high quality, designed with flair and produced with integrity.Anya Rice
Anya and I met through our magazine work and discovered that we both love craft. We have tried to cover as many areas as possible in the book, including ceramics and textiles, jewellery and woodwork, even surfboard construction and scented-candle making. It’s been a pleasure and a privilege to get to know the makers involved, to peek inside their studios and see their working processes and their gorgeous products. We’re very excited about the book and, if it goes well, we’d love to do a sequel. We have lots more ideas for books about Cornwall.Katherine Sorrell
