Diaspora network for Cornwall – creating connections across the globe for Cornwall’s business community

By Cornwall Trade & Investment - 05th March 2024

Cornwall, UK, internationally renowned for its rich cultural heritage, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant communities, is taking a bold step to build upon its global connections with the launch of a pilot diaspora programme led by Cornwall Trade and Investment - aimed at developing a pioneering network to foster collaboration and economic opportunities.

Nicola Lloyd, from Cornwall Trade & Investment, says: “Cornwall’s diaspora project, officially announced on St Piran’s Day, serves as a digital platform designed to unite Cornish people and enthusiasts around the world, irrespective of their geographical location. From Cornwall natives living abroad, to those with a deep affinity for Cornish culture or family connections, the network provides a virtual opportunity to forge meaningful connections.”

With its launch, the diaspora pilot for Cornwall aims to achieve several key objectives:

  • Community building: Connecting with Cornish communities throughout North America - an estimated two million people across the United States consider themselves to be of Cornish descent, with whole towns celebrating Cornish culture and heritage. Whilst over the border in Canada, 1500 people identified as ‘Cornish’ on a national census.
  • Networking and collaboration: The diaspora network will aim to facilitate networking opportunities among its members, enabling collaboration on projects, initiatives, and business ventures across borders.
  • Economic Development and Investment: Recognising the potential of diaspora engagement in driving economic growth, the diaspora network will encourage investment in Cornwall and support economic development initiatives in the region. By linking businesses, investors, and entrepreneurs with ties to Cornwall, the network will catalyse economic growth.
  • Promotion: The diaspora network will serve as ambassadors, promoting opportunities in Cornwall overseas and creating a ‘digital bridge’ between Cornwall and international markets – enhancing opportunities for Cornwall’s business community.

Cllr Louis Gardner, Portfolio Holder for Economy at Cornwall Council, says: “Cornwall invites Cornish people, descendants, enthusiasts, and friends from around the world to join the community and be part of this exciting journey of connection, and collaboration, particularly those who are connected to investment networks, can provide market intelligence for trade and export opportunities, and are able to provide introductions for Cornwall’s businesses across North America."

The Cornish Diaspora extends beyond the UK to countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, Argentina, New Zealand, Mexico, Panama, South Africa, Samoa, and Brazil. Between 1861 and 1901, an estimated 250,000 Cornish people emigrated abroad. Notably, pasties and saffron cakes have gained recognition among natives of Australia, the Caribbean, and the United States. The influence of Cornish culture is evident in the spread of brass bands, Cornish hymns, and the introduction of rugby union by Cornish miners, contributing to the development of rugby in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
