Dog Walker Makes Her Business Smarter Thanks to the Skills Hub
Even as a small business owner, you put the expectation upon yourself that you should know it all. Invoices should be processed with ease, paperwork done perfectly, and your website and social media should look slick and sharp. However, this isn’t always the case.
Joanne Tennant, who runs her business Dog Walking With Care, falls into this exact boat. After months of battling with paperwork and wondering if there was a local service that could help with advice or guidance on doing business better, she contacted the Skills Hub.
“It was great to speak to someone who I could openly tell that I was struggling. It’s a fundamental business thing, paperwork, so to hear from the Skills Hub that lots of other small business owners are in the same situation as me was very comforting,” Joanne said.
Based just outside of Launceston, Dog Walking With Care does just as the name suggests with Joanne being a keen dog walker and provider of home boarding options for the better part of the past five years.
The business was born out of a combination of a career change and the purchase of 10 acres of woodland, with Joanne then deciding that following her passion of working with dogs would be the best way to pay the bills.
“People thought I was a little bit mad setting up a dog walking and home boarding business,” she said.
After a period of stability, COVID-19 hit with the business world – and even the business of walking a dog – turned upside down.
“Just before COVID-19 kicked in I was able to pick and choose my own clients, so I was in a great position. Then COVID hit and it was cancellation after cancellation. I would normally have between four and five dogs staying each night, and then all of a sudden I had none so it has seen both a dip in my income and a significant change to how I live my life,” Joanne said.
With a new degree of normality upon us, and with business beginning to return to levels seen prior to COVID-19, Joanne is working with the Skills Hub to make her business better.
“When you’re working at full tilt you don’t get the chance to think about how you can do this, so that led me to contacting the Skills Hub to see how I could work smarter.
“What I am hoping to do is to look at creating an automation so that when the customer books in they receive an accurate invoice that can help save me time on doing added paperwork, while also thinking about how I can better advertise my business,” she said.
