How we've helped Jeanette Ratcliffe

Skills Hub case study

Business overview

An archaeologist with 40 years experience in carrying out heritage projects in Cornwall and Scilly.

Jeanette is looking to use her archaeology expertise alongside her passion for West Cornwall, and an interest in the fishing industry in and around Newlyn, to run tours across the local area.

I’m looking to offer a combination of guided walks along the coast of West Cornwall, river cruises on the River Fal, and guided boat trips around the Mounts Bay taking in sights along the cliff faces and the history of the various ports and harbours that we sail past.

How we helped

West Cornwall is a playground for many, with surf and a rich history sitting in harmony with an area of outstanding natural beauty.

For Jeanette Ratcliffe, a Newlyn based archaeologist (amongst wearing many other hats), this rich history is what drew her back home after completing her university studies.

“I started off doing an archaeology and anthropology degree, before diversifying and re-training as a psychotherapist, so I dovetailed freelance archaeology with providing counselling. In the last couple of years I’ve done some fishing related training, so now I’m dovetailing fishing history with archaeology in an area which I know like the back of my hand,” she said.

Jeanette is in the process of developing archaeological tours via land and sea across the West of Cornwall, with the aim to launch these over the summer. After working with the Growth Hub in 2020, Jeanette was referred over to the Skills Hub where she is furthering her knowledge across, predominantly, the digital landscape.

“I’m looking to offer a combination of guided walks along the coast of West Cornwall, river cruises on the River Fal, and guided boat trips around the Mounts Bay taking in sights along the cliff faces and the history of the various ports and harbours that we sail past,” Jeanette said.

She hopes to have her new website launched in the coming weeks, and a full book of tours booked in for the busy summer period.

“I was just about to start developing the business in earnest this time last year, so everything has been delayed for 12 months. But, I’m in a better position to launch a commercial business now than I was this time 12 months ago,” Jeanette said.
