How we've helped JR Flat Roofing

Skills Hub case study

Business overview

Established in 1984, JR Flat Roofing may operate right across the country, but it will always call Cornwall home. With a staff of 18 employees, JR Flat Roofing have adapted to working amidst COVID-19 and, in fact, are busier than they were this time 12 months ago.

JR Roofing’s Marion Rogers said that there’s one simple reason for that: “There is a lot more paperwork and a lot more social distancing, but you can’t run a roofing business from home.”

Training and skills development were always a part of the ethos of JR Flat Roofing, but that never extended beyond the workshop. Front office and administrative staff had never been considered when it came to training, but following a call with the Skills Hub that has since changed.

“I had not done any training for 20 years, it’s one of those things where you find yourself just getting on with running your business instead,” said Marion.

How we helped

The Skills Hub has worked with JR Flat Roofing on improving their digital presence, with COVID-19 seeing the need to ensure that the company keeps its online footprint visible. The desire to re-skill and undertake training has also prompted JR Flat Roofing to take on an apprentice, something again that was never a consideration prior to working with the Skills Hub.

Thanks to new and improved apprenticeship standards, apprenticeships reflect the skills that employers actually need so have a direct impact on productivity and efficiency. In fact, apprenticeships have been proven to increase productivity by an average £214 per week.

“It’s totally new, many years ago we had apprentices who went out to be a roofer, but once again I’d never considered someone being an admin apprentice for our office. Even though I did it myself 30 years ago,” said Marion.

“If someone wants to make a career of it, it’s a good investment for us as a business as they will become invested in us, and hopefully they think about staying on,” she added.
