How we've helped Kernow Controls

Skills Hub case study

Business overview

Kernow Controls, based in Penryn, develops building management systems and smoke control systems in the UK. The business is currently installing smoke extraction systems for Cross Rail in London. It’s a big contract for a small company – just five employees with more contractors. But the company is doing well, in fact it’s experiencing significant growth.

Every business should get a skills review. There’s always a skills gap in your business, even if you can’t see it for yourself. Someone from the outside can see your potential for growth.

Lucie

How we helped

Lucie Hackney, office manager for Kernow Controls, is tasked with ensuring the company has all its ducks in a row, including administration, finance, HR and marketing.

Lucie says it’s about developing a strong base, so the company’s growing team feels supported.  She’ll agree that training plays a huge role in preparing for business growth. While searching for the right support in the business’ huge endeavours, she was referred to the Skills Hub.

She was looking mostly for first aid and health and safety training for employees. Lucie had not, however, thought about her own skills needs. After an informal chat with, Clair, the Skills Hub representative, she realised that project management and marketing courses would help her work more confidently with in her role.

“Part of our company growth plan is building our quality management systems and achieving ISO 9001. The Skills Hub has helped me hone my skills by taking courses to understand the process and how to use different application platforms to make sure the company runs more smoothly.”

“Training has already made a difference to the company. Through my new marketing skills, I’m now using new platforms I would have never known about before. I’m online using Future Learn which has taught me lots of new things. Our viewers are growing on LinkedIn and I’m overseeing the development of our new website. I would have never learned how to project manage all this before using the Skills Hub.”

She’s thankful for her experience with the Skills Hub.

“It’s made finding training much easier. I wouldn’t have known about training organisations like the Cornwall Marine Network and Transform, or where to get courses like first aid training. If I hadn’t spoken to Clair at the Skills Hub, I would have spent more hours searching the internet.”
