How we helped

Westcountry Fabrication are a structural steel, metal fabrication and engineering firm based in Saltash, in the south east of Cornwall.

Starting out in a small shed at home, Westcountry Fabrication now has a team of 14 employees with their primary goal for the coming years being to increase their turnover to £1 million per year.

In order to achieve this, Westcountry Fabrication are continuing to push forward – despite COVID-19 – taking on new jobs and contracted works with large companies, while at the same time recognising that they require support with regard to the intricacies of running a business.

The Growth and Skills Hubs have worked with Westcountry Fabrication to make their business better. Director, Sam Hammond, linked with the Growth Hub in order to assess how the business can be leaner, limiting any unnecessary administrative burdens and turning their turnover into profit.

“At the start of the first lockdown we were in a little bit of a panic, as manufacturing seemed to be left behind. Our staff are our business, and without them it doesn’t function, so we contacted the Growth Hub to see what help was available,” said Sam.

The Skills Hub also jumped on board to lend their independent and impartial expertise, helping the team to develop skills in leadership and management, as well as digital marketing.

During the lockdown period, Sam found a silver lining in that it provided a fantastic opportunity in which to take a look at how the business was doing.

“Already we’ve had one of our workshop foremen taking leadership and management training, which has boosted his confidence, and I thought it was time for me to undertake some training on marketing,” said Sam.

On working with the Growth and Skills Hubs, Sam couldn’t have found the process any more helpful.

“There is loads to learn and having someone talk you through it all just speeds things up quite significantly,” she said.
